Callie Denham
Callie Denham joined the team August 2018 as our AmeriCorps VISTA. She is a Berea graduate with a degree in sculpture. Her work has been featured at the Loudoun House, The Plantory, Lussi Brown Coffee Bar, and galleries in Eastern & Western Kentucky.
“Found objects are my medium. I scavenge for items. I can’t help myself; I am a hoarder of things. I love to give a new purpose to unwanted matter. Seeing landfills grow and litter pile up in the environment fuels my passion. Waste and death are central themes throughout my practice. I love bones, skulls especially. I’m not sure when I became fascinated by bones. Realizing my obsession, I decided to market my artist-self as BONEZ.
I joined OTMAS through the AmeriCorps VISTA program, Volunteer In Service To America, because I was ready to do real work towards empowering my community. As a VISTA, I will help the organization with development and outreach efforts. Being an artist, I understand art as a healing process and view creativity as an outlet. This inspired me to join forces with OTMAS because I wanted to help them continue to carry out their incredible mission. I hope the children I serve discover the importance of creating and learn how to allow themselves to get lost in the process.”-CALLIE

Derek King Jr.
Derek King Jr is an artist based in Lexington, Kentucky. Using the human figure, Derek creates work surrounding the idea of identity within the youth community as well as the connection between the youth and the popular culture. Focusing on popular styles and trends, Derek wishes to bring awareness to the constant battle of identity the youth deal with daily as far as being themselves and/or emulating something they have seen in popular culture.
Derek earned his B.F.A. degree at the University of Kentucky in 2015, with a focus in drawing and painting. During his time of study, he was accepted into the Carrie Ellis Student Juried Art Show in 2011, 2012, and 2013. He was also accepted into the Juried Exhibition 'Not Too Big' at the MS Rezny Gallery in 2013. In 2015 he held his first solo show at the Tuska Gallery on the campus of the University of Kentucky and another solo show the following year at the Rain Damage Gallery in Lexington. He also was a selected artist in the group show 'Outlaws' in 2018 sponsored by the Lexington Art League. In 2019, Derek held another solo show over at the Lyric in Lexington titled “Sauce”.
With his focus on hip hop culture and the youth community, Derek takes from his own personal experiences and gives us a unique depiction of the youth culture and it’s connection with identity.
“I chose to teach with OTMAS because their mission aligns with what I want to do with my art; which is to help kids from lower-income areas and show them the many positive avenues they can take to success instead of going to the negative routes. Growing up on the north side of Lexington, I witnessed a lot of crime, drugs, and violence taking place, and a lot of these kids know nothing else but to sell drugs to make money or live the 'street' life to succeed. I wanted to join OTMAS to impact those kids and show them that someone from where they come from can do great things.”-DEREK

Dotty Berryman
Summer 2019 was the busiest summer yet. Preparing for the full schedule ahead, we reached out to the community to see what passionate individuals were interested in helping us with our summer sites. Dotty Berryman reached out to us, eager to join the team. We were very fortunate to have her bubbly energy and talents as part of the 2019 summer crew!
“I’m a barista and recent college graduate, born and raised in KY. I enjoy dabbling in all sorts of mediums and making outlandish color decisions, but the thread that connects most of my pieces is a focus on people- portraiture is my specialty and I love to use my friends as muses. I got involved at OTMAS because it combines creativity, positivity and working with kids- three things I’m passionate about. I hope that when kids see the tangible outcome of their creativity through participating in our art projects that they feel pride and potential.”- DOTTY

Malik Armon Washington
Malik Armon Washington aka Mr. Malik was born and raised in Paris, Kentucky and is currently trying to surface as an influential image. From childhood, whether it be replication of superheroes and cartoons or creative original art, it has somehow always been directly placed in the life of Malik. Painting, sketching and creating has appeared through his hobby and work ethic, showing that artspeaks to Malik. Other than being inspired by imagery of individualism and perspective, he hopes to create a world that is influencing self-worth and empathy. The non-situational way, through art.
“On The Move Art Studio has opened up the inner artist I left when I was trying to find myself. Working with occupational and schooling issues, art had been pushed back in a state of limbo due to prioritizing and unfortunate timing. I believe that OTMAS has truly woke my inner artist back up and has shown me how I couldn’t truly use my talent with my day to day jobs.
I hope that the children that we serve with OTMAS are left with a sign of good influence. Being around them as much as we do gives them a small impression of character and morals, even from working with art. Some children we serve have thoughts of doubt and difficulty with authority. Seeing the actions from the beginning of a class to the end shows how an art class can soothe the mind of negativity through expression. If creating the art pieces and projects with the kids is making any type of difference in their character, I’d hope it would be from our demonstration. Hopefully, we can help lead the next generation to success and have them be able to express themselves better. Maybe through art.” -MALIK

“I love teaching kids! Teaching is definitely my first love. Art is also one of the things that I love. I use painting as showing my passion for nature and my love for color. As you can see my art is very colorful and reflects my personality. I have volunteered with On the Move Art Studio because I like to teach, I like art, and I like children. Teaching is my passion and I hope that the children I teach enjoy making art. Also, I hope that they understand that making mistakes is ok, that nothing has to be perfect because in art or life nothing is perfect.”-MERCEDES

“I chose On The Move because of the incredible team that works together to bring kids art. Most importantly we get to use our classes to create a community for children of all ages. Highlights of my job are teaching kids new skills and helping them understand that there is nothing they can't do. My wish for the kids we serve is that they continue to use creativity as a way to express themselves.” -MEREDITH

Nancy Hall
“I moved to Lexington almost three years ago from Buffalo, NY. I have my degree in Graphic Design from Buffalo State College. Painting and drawing have always been a passion of mine. I love to paint the love and beauty of Mother Nature and try to capture the emotion of people and animals. I am emotionally invested in my work and it brings me joy when I am able to share that emotion and joy with others through my paintings.
I love working with OTMAS. It’s such a wonderful heartfelt mission, bringing the opportunity of allowing kids to be expressive in a group but as individuals through art. I love working with all the kids. They are always so excited to be a part of creating their masterpieces. It always makes my day when I’m involved with OTMAS. I hope the kids that I work with keep on creating, keep the joy of art in their hearts and the confidence within themselves that what they create is an extension of the wonderful children that they are.”-NANCY
